Bluewater beats Stratford City as top UK shopping centre
Lend Lease and Hermes' Bluewater has remained the top shopping centre in the UK, according to research by Trevor Wood Associates.
The new 1.9m sq ft Westfield Stratford City was ranked in third place, despite being the newest shopping mall in the UK and the largest urban mall in Europe.
The 1.67m sq ft Bluewater mall in Dartford has remained the top centre throughout 2011, scoring 7,706 points in the poll.
Capital Shopping Centre's MetroCentre in Gateshead scored 7,696 in second place, with Westfield Stratford City and London in third and fourth places, with scores of 7,669 and 7,635 respectively.
The Going Shopping - The Definitive Guide to Shopping Centres, analysis covers more than 900 schemes in the UK, and researches footfall, size, relative attractiveness of shops and facilities available to score the centres.
British Land and London & Stamford's Meadowhall in Sheffield fell to fifth place, CSC's Trafford Centre and Lakeside were ranked in sixth and seventh places respectively, followed by Westfield Merry Hill, Manchester Arndale and Hermes Real Estate and Prupim's thecentre:mk in Milton Keynes in tenth place.
Trevor Wood, senior partner of Trevor Wood Associates, says: “Millions will be making their way to Westfield Stratford City for Christmas shopping and the sales but it could not quite get top spot: This may change when our rankings are updated next year as many more stores are scheduled to open – equally other centres including Bluewater will see additional openings and long term the likes of Lakeside could grow considerably.
“The top four centres, of which Westfield has two, are separated by a hair’s breadth and it will be interesting to see how these emerge over 2012.”
